Welcome -this is a little site we built to just really record for our own purposes and friends on our journey of building a cob oven. We are nowhere near experts – we just googled like everyone else, and we’ve only ever built this one. 2 years on though I can report that it’s been amazing. We have perfected our fire making and oven heating to the point it takes about 2 minutes to cook our pizzas. We usually always try to follow with another meal to ensure we are maximising the heat. We LOVE our cobby.
Building an outdoor wood fired pizza oven out of cob can be an extremely cost effective and a pretty cool alternative to cooking pizzas and baking dinners in your back yard. It can take anywhere between a few weeks or a year depending on how much time you have on your hands.
This site is designed to take you through our journey of building our own cob oven and share with you our mistakes, challenges and successes. We are based in Australia in a cool climate mountain region where it can very occasionally snow in winter, and get quite hot in Summer. We worked on and off for about 12 months, but really it was all up about 20 days of solid work (with drying days in-between) spread out over the year.
What is Cob?
Cob is a centuries old method of building. By mixing clay, sand, straw and water together you form a material which can harden to form structures, in this case a wood fired pizza oven built from cob instead of bricks and mortar.
